Forward from Officer Commanding
613 Volunteer Gliding Squadron
Squadron Leader Daniel Johnson RAFVR(T)
613 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS) is one of 27 spread throughout the UK based at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. We fly all year round predominantly on weekends but also on several selected weeks allowing cadets the opportunity to learn continuously
Utilising our fleet of 4 Vigilant T1 (Grob 109b) motor gliders 613 VGS is tasked by HQAC to fly Air Cadets from Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, Middlesex and London Wings along with locally parented CCF units.
The main bulk of our training includes the shorter gliding induction courses (GIC) and the longer gliding scholarship (GS) course which involves training cadets up to solo standard.
We also recruit and train our own instructors from both cadets who have achieved solo standard and adult staff up to grade 1 pilot standard. Staff showing potential can then be sent to the RAF Central Gliding School for instructor categorisation.
The VGS is staffed by volunteers the bulk of who are either officers in the RAFVR (T), Civilian Gliding Instructors or Flight Staff Cadets. We are also assisted by regular RAF personnel who also give their spare time to volunteer.
This website has been designed as a tool for cadets allocated a GIC or GS course, VGS staff and visitors alike to find out the information they require.
